Alitalia unveils conservative new livery

QuoteAlitalia has unveiled a conservative new livery as part of a relaunch event for the airline following investment by Middle Eastern shareholder Etihad Airways.

The new colour scheme departs little from the previous livery – it retains the characteristic stylised 'A' logo on the fin, with the green and red extended over the tail cone.

Alitalia has dispensed with the green cheatline below the windows, keeping only the airline's brand name on an otherwise white fuselage.

Chief executive Silvano Cassano told the audience at the event in Rome – as the livery was unveiled on an Airbus A330-200 (I-EJGA) – that the jet would start operating the carrier's new service concepts from the Italian capital on 5 June.

Alitalia is bringing in a refurbishment across all cabins, and its products will include enhanced in-flight entertainment, wi-fi, and LiveTV.

All widebody aircraft will be transformed by mid-2016, says Cassano, while the narrowbody fleet will be completed by mid-2017.

Etihad Airways chief executive James Hogan said that the Abu Dhabi-based carrier – which has a 49% share of Alitalia – was "committed to rebuild" the Italian airline.

He said that Etihad had overseen a 13% cut in Alitalia's narrowbody fleet while the widebody fleet had increased by 32%.

"We have the orderbook to bring more aircraft into Alitalia when needed," he added.

The Rome long-haul network is set to increase from 87 weekly flights to 113 by mid-2018, with new routes including Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai, Mexico City, Santiago and San Francisco being introduced over the next three years.

Weekly long-haul connections from Milan will double to 25 in the same period.

"Alitalia can be one of the best airlines in Europe and the world," said Hogan. "But the focus on cost, productivity and how we generate revenue is fundamental."

Hogan said there was an "opportunity" to turn the carrier into a stable and healthy operation. But he cautioned that the chance must be seized by the airline's management and personnel.

"The challenge is in your hands," he told the audience.

"We don't come to Alitalia telling you how to run an airline – you know how to run an airline," he added. "We come to Alitalia to work as a partner, so both our businesses grow."

Austrian Airlines to inherit Embraer 195 fleet from Lufthansa CityLine

QuoteThe board of Austrian Airlines has approved the purchase of 17 Embraer 195 aircraft in almost new condition with a list price of close to $900 million.

The first jet will already be delivered in August 2015, modified in line with Austrian Airlines standards and used for training purposes.

Close to 200 pilots of Austrian Airlines will be retrained to operate the Embraer aircraft starting in the autumn of this year.

The first commercial flight is planned to take place in January 2016.

"A decision was made today on one of the largest investment projects in the history of Austrian aviation.

Some 900 jobs are directly connected to this investment program," explained Andreas Otto, chief commercial officer, Austrian Airlines.

The 17 jets will come from Lufthansa CityLine, which in return will receive Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen jets from Eurowings.

The Embraer 195 with 120 seats per aircraft is considerably bigger than the Fokker planes with 80 resp.

At present, the new jets have an average age of four years (built 2009-2012), compared to the average age of about 21 years for the Fokker fleet of Austrian Airlines.

As a result, the replacement of the aircraft will significantly rejuvenate the Austrian Airlines fleet.

The list price of an Embraer 195 jet is about $52 million.

However, the most important factor pertaining to aircraft are the on-going operating costs.

The younger airplanes use about 18 per cent less fuel per aircraft seat.

This makes the Embraer jets much more environmentally compatible.

Air France-KLM, easyJet, IAG, Lufthansa Group and Ryanair call for a new EU Aviation Strategy

QuoteThe CEOs of Europe's five largest airline groups – Air France-KLM, easyJet, International Airlines Group (IAG), Lufthansa Group and Ryanair – met collectively for the first time today (June 17) and agreed to work together to lobby for the development of a new EU Aviation Strategy that will support growth and jobs across Europe, strengthen the sector and give Europe's passengers lower fares and more choice.

The meeting took place (in Brussels) in response to the new EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc's consultation on a new EU Aviation Strategy. The five agreed a vision for this strategy that would match the revolution in aviation that the liberalization of Europe's airline sector created a generation ago, through the creation of the internal aviation market.

The five airlines identified four measures that would support the Commission's objectives of enhancing the competitiveness of the European air transport industry both at European and international level, supporting growth and jobs across Europe and which would help consumers through the provision of more flights and lower fares.
These measures are:

The development of an EU Aviation strategy with a plan for a simple efficient regulatory structure, which would strengthen the competitiveness of European airlines, ensure jobs and growth through innovation (e.g. Horizon 2020), protect consumer interests and promote more efficiency to reduce costs.

Lowering the cost of the EU's airports by ensuring that monopoly airports are effectively regulated; ensuring that passengers receive the full benefit of the commercial revenues which they create at airports; and that security charges are efficient. This could be achieved by reforming the Airport Charges Directive.

Delivering reliable and efficient airspace by reducing the cost of ATC provision; ensuring that ATC strikes do not cause disruption to passengers across Europe; resetting the Single European Sky strategy by focusing on using new technology to make efficiency savings; and using SESAR funding to drive compliance with the Single Sky framework.
Stimulating more economic activity and jobs by creating the right regulatory environment, removing passenger taxes and unreasonable environmental taxes.

The five CEOs – Alexandre de Juniac, Carolyn McCall, Willie Walsh, Carsten Spohr and Michael O'Leary – outlined their vision:

"Europe's airlines form the most competitive sector in aviation with a diverse mix of carriers offering competition and choice to consumers. This is the first time we have set aside our competitive battles to highlight the importance of a new European Aviation Strategy.

The liberalization of aviation in Europe in the 1990's, creating a fully liberalized single market with a comprehensive common regulatory framework 18 years ago, strongly enhanced competition across Europe. As a result, consumers have benefited with substantially lower fares and more routes across Europe and to the rest of the world. At the same time, EU airlines have maintained leading safety standards. The range and quality of services have increased and airline costs have fallen by 1 – 2% per year for the last two decades.

We believe that this decline should now be matched by a reduction in those costs which airlines do not control themselves. "As the new Transport Commissioner prepares a new Aviation Strategy for Europe she must drive more competition, encourage more efficiency and help reduce costs in other parts of our industry (such as monopoly airports and Air Traffic Control providers) and reduce the tax burden on passengers."

Aviation is a proven driver of economic growth and jobs. The proposed measures will create many hundreds of thousands of jobs – particularly for young people, at a time of high youth unemployment in countries such as Italy or Spain – and increase Europe's GDP. The group will write to the EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc asking for these measures to be put in place.

Alongside the proposed policy positions the five CEO's confirmed their support for several key principles and action items which should underpin EU aviation policy. The most important of these is the commitment to safety and ensuring that safety standards are developed based on a risk based scientific assessment.

The CEOs confirmed their support for the liberalization of the whole aviation value chain and for pro-competition policy and regulation within the EU. They also confirmed their opposition to the provision of State-aid, as a general principle, to airlines and airports. They agreed that EU and national regulation and policies should support the efficient delivery of services, and that this includes the need for efficient operations to minimise the environmental impact of aviation. The importance of balanced consumer rights was also underlined; EU and national policies need to ensure that consumer rights are respected.

The CEOs agreed to work together to encourage the Commission and EU member states to take up the proposed measures. The five airlines agreed that airline representation in Brussels today is not as effective as it could be – with six airline representative organisations – and agreed to explore possible forms of future representation.

The five airlines between them carried a total of 420 million passengers in 2014, accounting for half of the passenger journeys in Europe.

Qantas 'mistake' causes fare frenzy, offering cheap flights from Australia to Los Angeles

QuoteA "MISTAKE" in Qantas' online booking system quenched the appetites of hungry Aussie travellers after advertising flights to Los Angeles — that were too good to be true.

On Wednesday morning flights on US website Hopper.com were advertised for as little as $A577 return from Australian cities to Los Angeles — and travellers were quick to snap up the "flash sale" bargain which would apparently run across a number of days or until tickets had run out.

They were also available on skyscanner.com.au, which had one way fares reduced to $A286 between August and November and again in January and March — a dirt cheap opportunity to escape the chill of the Australian winter for brighter surroundings.

But by 11:30am, the sale had been swiftly removed and left lucky ticket holders scratching their heads. "Update: Qantas ended this sale at 11:30am, Sydney time, after more than 12 hours," read a message. So what just happened?

"Skyscanner displayed lower than average flights from Australia to Los Angeles as a result of a technical glitch from a partner. Skyscanner doesn't offer sale fares and the glitch has since been rectified," a spokesperson for Skyscanner told news.com.au.

A spokesperson for Qantas confirmed with news.com.au that the sale prices were indeed a mistake.

"There was a glitch that impacted third party USA-based online booking systems, as we made some fare changes effective 1 July for travel originating in Australia."

"These mistake fares were incorrectly offered and have been removed from sale. The glitch was fixed at 11.30am AEST (yesterday) and we're currently following up affected bookings."

As to whether the sold flights would be honoured, Qantas told news.com.au:"We are contacting affected customers impacted by the glitch."

Qantas 'mistake' causes fare frenzy, offering cheap flights from Australia to Los Angeles

QuoteEmirates Airline has taken delivery of its 65th Airbus A380-800 and has phased out its last Boeing 777-200.

Emirates aircraft assets manager Philip Audsley said in a statement, "So far, in 2014 and 2015 we have phased out three Boeing 777-200s and eight Airbus A340-500s on schedule ... For the year 2015/2016, we're planning a total of 10 phase-outs.

The last remaining Boeing 777-200, registration A6-EMF, departed from Dubai International to Arizona via Boston for de-registration on July 14. Since joining the Emirates fleet in 1996, the aircraft flew an estimated 60 million kilometers (37 million miles).

According to Emirates, it operates 234 widebody aircraft with an average age of 75 months. It took delivery of 24 new aircraft in its fiscal year 2014/15 and expects 26 new aircraft during the current fiscal year.

The Dubai-based carrier is the world's largest operator of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft.

The recently delivered 491-seat A380 operates on long-haul, nonstop flights to destinations such as Dallas and Los Angeles.

Emirates will soon introduce the first of 15 A380s in a dual class 617-seat configuration. The first route will be Dubai-Copenhagen from Dec. 1. As previously announced, the carrier will also operate this configuration on one of its four daily A380 flights to Bangkok.

Emirates' A380s serves 34 destinations and has a further 75 on order.

Emirates president Tim Clark told ATW, "We make good money from the A380—wherever it flies we have 85% to 95% load factors. We have 100 airports on our list of destinations that could be served with A380s."

Emirates to deploy A380 on more routes in 2016

QuoteEmirates today announced it will deploy its highly-popular A380 to even more destinations across its network in 2016 – reinforcing its commitment to provide an enhanced onboard experience for its passengers.

Birmingham (BHX), Prague (PRG) and Taipei (TPE) have been added to the growing list of Emirates A380 destinations, making Emirates the first and only airline to operate a scheduled A380 service from each of these destinations.  Emirates' daily Birmingham flight, EK39/40, will be up-gauged to an A380 beginning 27th March 2016. Emirates A380 services to Prague and Taiwan will start from 1st May 2016. Additionally, Barcelona will be served with a second daily Emirates A380 service from 1st June 2016.

"The introduction and increase of Emirates'A380 services in these strategic destinations means more travellers will have the opportunity to experience our industry-leading A380 product," said Thierry Antinori, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Emirates.

"Our onboard innovations on the A380, across all classes, continue to impress and delight our customers. Deploying larger capacity aircraft, such as the A380, also helps us to efficiently meet growing passenger demand in these markets, contribute to tourism development and enhance customer choice and options," Thierry Antinori added.

Flying the world's largest fleet of A380 aircraft at 71, Emirates continues to set the pace for A380 deployment.  Since Emirates launched is first A380 flight in 2008, the aircraft has flown over 42 million passengers, covering more than 630 million kilometres.

Emirates' inaugural A380 flight to Birmingham, EK39 will depart Dubai at 07:35hrs and arrive at 12:20hrs and will be operated in a two-class configuration.  EK40 will depart Birmingham at 14:20hrs and arrive in Dubai at 00:35hrs (+1). The addition of an A380 on this route follows the recent introduction of Emirates' third daily flight to Birmingham, as well as the airline's milestone 15th year of operations to the city being celebrated this week.

The daily Emirates Dubai-Prague route, operating as EK139, will depart Dubai at 09:05hrs and arrive in Prague at 13:30hrs. The return leg, operating as EK140, will depart Prague at 15:40hrs and arrive in Dubai at 23:35hrs. The A380 route will be operated in a three-class configuration, representing a 44 per cent increase in capacity.

In Taiwan, Emirates will up-gauge its service to a two-class A380 service, representing a 44 per cent increase in capacity. Emirates flight EK366 will depart Dubai at 04:35hrs and arrive in Taipei at 16:50hrs the same day. The return flight EK367 will leave Taipei at 23:30hrs, arriving in Dubai at 05:05hrs the next day. Taipei Taoyuan International Airport recently completed enhancements making it compatible with the double-decker aircraft.

Barcelona will be served twice daily with an Emirates A380 service, in a three-class configuration. From 1st June 2016, the second A380 service flight EK187 will depart Dubai at 15:45hrs and arrives in Barcelona at 20:55, while the return leg, EK188 departs Barcelona at 22:40hrs and arrives in Dubai at 07:25hrs the next day. First Class and Business Class passengers can also socialise at 40,000 feet at the Onboard Lounge.  Emirates' two-class configured A380 features 58 flat-bed seats and the Onboard Lounge in Business Class, and 557 spacious seats in Economy Class.

Passengers in all classes can enjoy access to over 2,000 channels of films, TV shows, music and games through ice, Emirates' award-winning inflight entertainment system, as well as free Wi-Fi and gourmet cuisine.
