Cheeky Nando's: Coventry restaurant design inspired by rainfall

Interior design and architecture consultancy, Harrison, designed the recently opened Nando's restaurant within the Tesco superstore at Arena Park Shopping Centre, Coventry

As with all Nando's restaurants, the brief was open so long as it hits the right African inspired cues. Harrison implemented bursts of colour, natural and recycled materials and strong patterns.

The impressive ceiling feature was inspired by rainfall, something that is taken for granted in the UK, but revered and rare in Africa. With a double-height space at the front, the designers needed to create intimacy in a way that was on-brand and had a visual impact. Working in conjunction with Atelier Lighting, they designed matching tubes with built-in high powered spots, to cast light down onto the tube ceiling. The raw, earthy tones of the suspended tubes represent the tones of scorched earth.

The result has a balance of impactful colour and subdued earthy undertones, synonymous with the Nando's brand. The walls are heavily textured, and a blank canvas for the variety of artwork to adorn the walls.

It always questions itself and is privately owned by people who care very much about design and what impact it can have on people's lives. Ikea in Downtown Vienna?

Do we even want Ikea in our city centres? The Swedish home furnishings retailer has now realized that, in addition to its massive shopping warehouses on the outskirts of cities around the globe, even more sales can made inside the city. Of course, urban dwellers nowadays are spoiled: everything should be nearby and easily accessible without a car. So the new inner-city Ikea store in Vienna is based on the idea of the 15-minute city. The seven-storey building at Westbahnhof train station opens like an oversized set of shelves onto bustling urban space along Gürtel road. It is connected to public transport system, but here is no parking lot. Together with Viennese architectural firm querkraft, Ikea is doing all it can to rule out any possible criticism against their model project from the outset. Will it succeed?

Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes's new French school centre focusing on space
The essential planning criteria was to provide as much natural daylight as possible, to design open and bright rooms and to allow for a large amount of freedom of movement and direct access to the outdoors

The architectural quality of space is the central focus for the new elementary school and kindergarten by Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes in Antony, a commune that belongs to the Métropole du Grand Paris and is located 20 minutes away from the centre of Paris with the RER C train.

The school consists of four wings that surround a large, trapezoidal courtyard on the ground floor; this floor is allocated for the kindergarten while the first floor hosts the elementary school, which has its own recreational area in the form of a large terrace. The building follows the limits of the site to fit in with the urban structure, as well as to obtain as much space as possible for the terrace.

The building's wings are staggered in height to guarantee an optimal sunlight all year round: the northeast wing has three floors; the northwest one has two and the wing that follows the winding road from southwest to southeast has one floor. As the sun shines into the kindergarten courtyard and the classrooms that surround it, energy consumption remains low.

The classrooms of children, from two and a half to six years old, are situated on the ground floor. The rooms feature floor-to-ceiling glass façades that can open largely with sliding doors and are all oriented towards the spacious playground.

Children can directly reach this area designed as a friendly art landscape with gentle hills made of sports surfaces, trees and play zones. The classrooms on the first floor follow the same principle, as they are also oriented towards spacious exterior spaces. The building's rounded edges form the spacious terrace, partly made of wood. A sheltered space forms a framed view to the neighbourhood and allows children to play outside even in rainy weather; one can play or talk together in any weather until class begins.
