'Are you kidding?' controller asks Southwest jet that landed at wrong airport

QuoteAudio recordings released on Monday reveal confusion between air traffic controllers and the veteran crew of a Southwest Airlines jet after they landed at the wrong airport in Missouri in January.

"I assume I'm not at your airport," one of the pilots radioed to controllers at Branson Airport, the Boeing 737's intended destination.

"4013, um, have you landed?" comes the response, according to the recordings released by the Federal Aviation Administration.

"Yea," says the pilot, after a brief pause.

Then the controller calls to another air traffic facility for the area to inquire about the plane, and there is this exchange:

"Did you watch Southwest land?"

"Yea, why?"

"Did you see it come here? They're saying it landed at the wrong airport."

"Are you kidding?"

"Yea, no, I'm not."

The plane from Chicago actually landed several miles away at a municipal airport in Taney County, which doesn't have a control tower.

And that wasn't all.

The Taney County airport's runway is 3,738 feet, about half the length of the Branson runway, which is 7,140 feet. That forced pilots to act fast and brake hard when the aircraft with 129 passengers and crew touched down.

No one was injured and the jet took off the next day.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

The pilots remain on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Southwest said in a statement.

Lufthansa Hostage-Taking Ends After Brief Standoff

QuoteA Kosovo man took a flight attendant hostage on a Lufthansa flight on Tuesday but surrendered to police after a brief standoff, police said.

German media said a 50-year-old flight attendant suffered cuts after the man put her in a headlock and held a razor blade to her throat minutes after takeoff from Munich airport.

Other crew rushed to the assistance of the flight attendant and there was a scuffle, Bild online said. When no one understood the man's demands, he barricaded himself in a toilet with the flight attendant. The pilot turned the plane around and returned to the airport.

All 76 passengers disembarked from the Lufthansa plane, which had been bound for Budapest. Only the flight attendant, pilots and the Kosovo man stayed on board.

Police, with help from a translator, persuaded the 28-year-old, who spoke Albanian, to surrender. His petition for asylum had been rejected and he was being sent back to Budapest, they said. Three flight attendants suffered injuries, police added.

Airlines should look at livestreaming flight data: IATA

QuoteThe aviation industry should consider technology allowing more live-streaming of flight data following the disappearance of a Malaysian jetliner, but cost and practicalities remain major problems, the head of the global airlines' body said on Tuesday.

The loss of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 more than three weeks ago has renewed interest in the possibility of in-flight streaming of "black box" data that could help locate aircraft and enable accident investigations to begin sooner.

"The technology exists now to do it, but it is not clear how practical it would be," Tony Tyler, director general and chief executive of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), told reporters at a news conference in Kuala Lumpur.

"To have every aircraft streaming all date at every phase of the flight, can it be managed or would it simply overwhelm us?"

No confirmed wreckage has been found from MH370, which vanished less than an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing on March 8 with 239 people on board.

All investigators have had to go on in locating the aircraft are hourly electronic "handshakes" exchanged with a commercial satellite for around six hours after the Boeing 777's communication systems stopped transmitting.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced after 17 days that the plane "ended" in the southern Indian Ocean after analysis of that satellite and radar data by Britain's Inmarsat.

"IATA will be doing what we can to get that issue looked at thoroughly and some decisions made after," said Tyler.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has said it was studying the possibility of live-streaming data, but Tyler said a broad consensus would be needed between airlines, major manufacturers and regulators.

"It's very important that if we're going to have regulation covering this area, that it's done on a globally consistent basis," said Tyler, who joined IATA in 2011 after five years as chief executive of Cathay Pacific Airways.

Tyler also defended Malaysia Airlines from the criticism it faced after it emerged two passengers had boarded the plane using stolen passports. This was a focus of the investigation at an early stage, before authorities said the men were probably asylum seekers and ruled out any links with terrorism.

He said airlines were spending "millions" to provide passenger information in advance to governments who required it.

"Governments should use it to facilitate border controls and to make these controls very effective," he said.

QuoteBreaking Now: Terror Attack On Karachi Airport, Planes Burning  :o

Details remain fairly scant at this point, but it appears that Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan has come under terrorist attack by gunmen strapped with explosives. The sky is bright red over NE Karachi and explosions continue to rock the airport's apron area.

An older terminal and maintenance area used for VIP traffic and cargo, along with airport offices and other administrative facilities, located on south-west side of the airport was the area targeted in the attack. It is not clear whether or not a specific VIP or aircraft was targeted but reports say that empty magazines are littered all over a maintenance and engineering section of the terminal where an exchange of fire was initiated with airport security personnel. The attackers are said to have been dressed in airport specific uniforms and carrying automatic weapons, grenades and suicide vests.

Meanwhile an account described an attacker dressed in an airport uniform that attempted to steal an air-side vehicle was shot by security forces in the process. He then he blew himself up.

A gun battle is ongoing (has since ended at 5Pm PST) and multiple loud explosions have been heard coming from the tarmac area. As of now reports state that 20 people are confirmed dead, with ten of them being gunmen. The number of non-fatal causalities is unknown at this time but is said to be fairly large.

Multiple reports are coming in from Twitter and Facebook saying that the assault was an attempted hijacking that went bad and that there are multiple aircraft effected. Plane Spotters Bangladesh reports:

We have received news that 7 aircraft have completely been destroyed that included 1 Cargolux 747 & 1 PIA A310 (AP-BDZ). An ATR from PIA and an Airblue bird has been damaged as well. Thai 333 (HS-TEL) bearing Star Alliance livery has also been damaged as rumored. She is suggested to be on the tarmac as during the time of attack she getting ready to depart KHI. An EK 77W (A6-EBP) is also suggested to be in the same predicament.
Meanwhile, other reports say that fewer aircraft were severely damaged and reports that there was an explosion in a large maintenance hangar located close to the headquarters of Pakistani Airlines are numerous.

FLIGHTSTATS 2013 AIRLINE ON-TIME PERFORMANCE SERVICE AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

FlightStats has published the On-time Performance Service (OPS) Awards for the last five years in an effort to recognize the "Best of the Best" Airlines that demonstrate consistently high performance and deliver on their promise to get passengers to their destinations in a timely manner.

The Finalists, announced by FlightStats last week included: (in alphabetical order)

Major International Airlines:
Air New Zealand, ANA, Delta Air Lines, Iberia, Japan Airlines, KLM, Korean Air Lines, Lufthansa, SAS
and Saudia

The winner is Japan Airlines.

For the Major International Airlines category FlightStats analyzed the on-time arrival performance of the largest airlines in the world based on Available Seat Miles. In addition, each airline was required to have more than 1,000 scheduled flights to 3 or more geographical regions. A tracking coverage threshold of 90% was used to limit the analysis to carriers where FlightStats had comprehensive historical data in 2013. In all, 31 airlines representing approximately 7.6 million flights met the criteria and were included in the analysis. The top 10 performers are listed in the table below, ranked by on-time arrival performance.

Major Airline Network (Mainline and Regional Flights):
Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines , Alitalia, ANA, COPA, Finnair
, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa and SAS

The winner is Japan Airlines.

This category includes both mainline flights and those flights operated by the airline's regional carriers. For this category, FlightStats analyzed the on-time performance of 25 major carriers. In aggregate, these networks were comprised of a total of 11.9 million flights. A tracking threshold of 90% was used as a requirement to be included in the analysis. The following table lists the top 10 airline networks ranked by on-time arrival performance. Note that for an airline network to be considered in this category, at least 15% of the total network flights must be operated by a regional airline.

North America Major Airlines:
Air Canada, AirTran, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and WestJet

The winner is Alaska Airlines.

he North America Major Airlines category is comprised of the 10 major carriers in North America operating 4.9 million flights in 2013. A tracking threshold of 90% was a requirement. Note that mid-size and regional airlines are not included in this category. The following table is a list of the top 10 airlines in North America, ranked by on-time arrival performance.

Europe Major Airlines:
Aeroflot, Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Condor Flugdienst, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, SAS
 and SWISS

The winner is KLM.

The Europe Major Airlines category is comprised of the top 10 major carriers in Europe operating nearly 2 million flights in 2013. A tracking threshold of 90% was a requirement. The table below includes the top 10 airlines in this category, ranked by on-time arrival performance.

Asia-Pacific Major Airlines:
Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Japan Airlines, Jet Airways, Korean Air Lines, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways International and Virgin Australia International

The winner is Japan Airlines.

A total of 17 airlines operating just over 2.9 million flights in 2013 were analyzed for the Asia-Pacific Major Airlines category. A tracking coverage of 90% was required for an airline to be considered for an award in this category.

FlightStats continues to improve its data coverage and accuracy in Asia, especially in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, where our coverage exceeded 90% in 2013. Improving Asian coverage remains a priority for FlightStats, and we will continue to work with key partners to provide visibility into this important region.

Middle East and Africa Major Airlines:
EgyptAir, El Al, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, Saudia, South African Airways and Turkish Airlines

The winner is Gulf Air.

This category includes major airlines from the Middle East and Africa regions and includes 10 carriers that operated just over 1 million flights in 2013. Since data tracking coverage in these regions is a bit more challenging than elsewhere in the world, the threshold was lowered to just under 80%. The table below lists the top 10 airlines ranked by on-time arrival performance.

South America Major Airlines*:
Aerolineas Argentinas, Avianca, Azul, Copa Airlines, Gol, LAN Airlines and TAM Linhas Aereas

* FlightStats data tracking coverage in South America is more limited than in most other geographies resulting in a shorter list of major carriers.

The winner is Copa Airlines.

FlightStats data tracking coverage in South America is more limited than in most other geographies resulting in a shorter list of major carriers. In addition, the tracking threshold was set to 70%. The top 7 airlines meeting the criteria operated just under 1.2 million flights in 2013. The results are listed in the table below sorted by on-time arrival performance.

Low-Cost Airlines:
AirAsia, AirTran, Condor Flugdienst, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Jetstar Airways, Southwest Airlines, Thai AirAsia, Virgin America and Vueling

The winner is Thai AirAsia.

FlightStats tracks the on-time performance of many of the world's largest low cost carriers and, therefore, has included an LCC category this year. A tracking threshold of 90% was used for this category. Note that two of the world's largest LCCs, easyJet and Ryanair, are not included due to insufficient data tracking coverage. This is unfortunate since, based on the available data, both airlines appeared to do very well and we hope to include them in the future.
