Abia acum am aflat ca exista asa ceva:

QuoteOn 15 August 1998 the 142nd Unmanned Aircraft Squadron was established at Giarmata. This new unit replaced the 31st Sqn and its MiG-21R, which had been disbanded two months earlier. In the first phase 6 UAVs were acquired (3 delivered in 1999, 3 in 2000), a ground control station and a data analysis terminal; all in the frame of a 20,5 million dollars contract with the US company AAI Corporation. The contract had two options: the first for another three UAVs and a ground control station and a second for 12 UAVs and two control stations. In the year 2000 Romania contracted the first option with a value of 7,5 million dollars; the system was delivered in 2001 and entered service with the 143rd Squadron at Mihail Kogalniceanu, where it replaced the VR-3. The funding for the two acquisitions was supplied by US Government loans.

The first mishap of a Shadow 600 took place on 20 April 2000, when one of the UAVs crashed at landing near the Giarmata runway, while returning from a training sortie. In the same year the 142nd Sqn was declared operational. In 2003 both squadrons trained in common for three months on Craiova airbase, after which the 142nd was deployed in Iraq in August. Six Shadow 600 were based on an airstrip in eastern Iraq, working for the Polish contingent and being used mainly for road surveillance and finding IEDs. While still operated by Air Force personnel, they were under the command of the DGIA (General Direction for Informations of the Defence). Until July 2009 when they were sent back home, the drones performed over 800 soties, totaling approximately 2500 flight hours. Three Shadow 600 were lost due to the harsh operating environment. Out of the remaining total of 5, two were cannibalised for spares, making the other three flyable for another year.

In 2010 the second option of the original contract was activated; 12 drones and two ground control stations were bought for around 20 million dollars. The airframes are identical to the first batches, but the electro-optical sensors are more capable. Shadow 600 remains the most rarely seen aircraft currently in service, being static displayed in public on very few occasions: at Timisoara open day in June 1999 and at the airshow there in June 2000, as well as at Mihail Kogalniceanu during ROIAS 2001 airshow, in August. In July 2009 a camouflaged example with the serial oversprayed was paraded trough Bucharest on Air Force day.



The Shadow 600s delivered in 1999-2001 had a light grey overall paintscheme; the serials (601-609) were written with small black letters on the sides of the fuselage. The roundel is usually carried only on the left side of the fuselage. The ones delivered in 2010 have a three tone grey camouflage and serials in the 610-621 range. The one in the picture above is serial 621, undergoing checks before or after a flight. (Observatorul militar nr.12/2010)

Legat de acest topic, parerea mea e ca F-16 cu un upgrade serios, gen Block50/52(cum au polonezii) +PESA radar pasiv + casca activa, plus integrarea sistemului AIM9X Sidewinder ar fi un avion remarcabil pentru 2020,  nu stiu daca s-ar inscrie in generatia 4+, neavand element stealth. Portughezii au MLU Mid Life Update astea fiind avioane construite la inceputul anilor 90, modificari ale Block15, C/D, electronica si sistemele de navigatie sunt deja depasita de rusi.
F-16 dupa parerea mea este un avion bun, destul de simplu de intretinut si operat. Acum parerile sunt impartite. Parerea mea insa este ca numarul este foarte mic pentru necesitatile de aparare ale Romaniei.
O alta naivitate ar fi sa credem ca ne putem inscrie pentru F-35 Lighting 2. Este un avion extrem de scump, iar capabilitatiile sale sunt puse sub semnul intrebarii. Australienii chiar se gandesc sa renunte la proiect si sa cumpere F-18 SuperHornet in continuare.
