Two Japan Airlines 787s hit by system failure

QuoteJapan Airlines (JAL) had to divert two Boeing 787 aircraft bound for Tokyo back to their departure airports on 9 October because of different technical issues encountered after take-off.

The first aircraft, registration JA832J, had to return to Moscow's Domodedovo International airport when pilots discovered a failure in the aircraft's electrical system after take-off. The failure affected power to the aircraft's lavatories and galleys, says a JAL spokesman.

The other jet, registration JA825J, turned back to San Diego when an alert indicating failure in the right engine's anti-ice system was activated.

Both aircraft have since returned to service after undergoing the necessary maintenance work, says JAL. Both flights were, however, severely delayed.

Boeing Restructures Commercial Planes Division

QuoteBoeing said it will restructure its commercial aircraft strategy and marketing functions, just days after it lost a USD$9.5 billion order in Japan, previously its most secure market.

The action, announced in a memo by Boeing commercial planes chief executive Ray Conner that was obtained by Reuters news agency, follows Japan Airlines decision on Monday to pick Airbus A350s to replace its Boeing 777s, rather than the next-generation Boeing 777X model.

[...]

Conner linked the shifts to the retirement of Mike Bair on November 1. Bair is head of the marketing and strategy groups that look at Boeing's long-range commercial plane market forecasts and design its product line and strategy.

In the new structure, marketing functions under Bair will shift to the sales group and be led by marketing vice president Randy Tinseth, who will report to global sales chief John Wojick.

Strategy and business development functions will shift to the finance group and will be led by Kevin Schemm, who will be head of finance and strategy.

Bair, 57, joined Boeing in 1979 as an engineer working on aircraft noise for the 767. As a rising star of the company, he later went on to build the justification for the aircraft that replaced it, the 787 Dreamliner, which he boasted would be "library quiet".

He rose to head the 787 programme as the company outsourced production of major components to suppliers around the world. Bair left that role in 2007, when the programme was about six months behind schedule, taking up his current role as chief of market and strategy.

Production problems ultimately delayed the 787's entry into service by 3-1/2 years beyond its original schedule. Since then, the plane has suffered a series of problems, including burning batteries on two 787s that prompted regulators to ground the entire fleet in January. Flights resumed in April after Boeing redesigned the battery system.

On Thursday, Norwegian Air Shuttle revealed that Boeing had recently redesigned another part - a hydraulic pump that activates wing flaps - after the unit failed repeatedly on a new 787 that the Nordic airline received in August.

Boeing Reduces 747-8 Production Rate

QuoteFacing weakened demand for big passenger and freight aircraft, Boeing has opted to reduce the 747-8 production rate from 1.75 aircraft per month to 1.5 through 2015.

The move comes as the company passes the half way point of its accumulated order backlog for the aircraft, the vast majority of which are for the freighter model. To date, the 747-8 has accumulated 107 orders, 56 of which have been delivered.

The sustained slow down in the cargo market is the main reason for the cutback, even though Boeing's market forecast calls for long-term average growth in the air cargo market to begin returning in 2014. Overall the company forecasts global demand for 760 large aircraft in the 747-8 and Airbus A380 category over the next 20 years, valued at $280 billion.

Boeing's outlook for the 747-8 market could also be impacted by the development of the 777X, which is expected to enter service at the turn of the decade. For the moment Eric Lindblad, vice president and general manager, 747 Program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes says "this production adjustment better aligns us with near-term demand while stabilizing our production flow. Although we are making a small adjustment to our production rate, it doesn't change our confidence in the 747-8 or our commitment to the program."

Korean Air orders more Boeing widebodies

QuoteKorean Air has finalised an order for 12 Boeing aircraft, including five 747-8s, six 777-300ERs and one 787, according to a Boeing media release.

The deal has a value of $3.9 billion at list prices, says Boeing.

Korean Air made a commitment for the 747s and 777s at the Paris air show in June.

With the order, Korean Air now has orders for 10 747-8s, 10 777-300ERs and 11 787s.

Boeing works to improve 787 dispatch reliability

QuoteBoeing continues to address problems affecting the dispatch reliability of its 787 aircraft, including issues caused by faulty messages from the aircraft computer systems.

The nearly 100 787s operated by 16 customers worldwide have a dispatch reliability of roughly 97%, but some operators have reliability rates much lower, says Boeing's president and chief executive James McNerney during the company's third quarter earnings call on 23 October.

"We are not yet satisfied with fleet-wide performance... . We will not be satisfied until we are meeting our customers expectations across the board," McNerney says.

Roughly one-third of problems are caused by false messages from the 787's software, according to McNerney.

"That is frustrating for us and very frustrating for customers," he says.

The company is addressing the problems by making engineering changes to the software and making more spare parts available, McNerney adds.

"We are making good progress," he says. "We still have more work to do."

Technical problems grounded a 787 operated by Norwegian for 12 days in October, and two Japan Airlines 787s diverted in October due to technical problems.

Despite the 787 problems, Boeing reported an operating profit of $1.8 billion in the third quarter, up 16% from the same period last year.

The commercial aircraft division earned an operating profit of $1.6 billion, up 40% year-over-year.

Seattle Could Lose 777X If Deal Rejected - Boeing

QuoteBoeing said it was ready to look for another location to build the 777X if assembly workers and local politicians do not ratify plans to build it in the Seattle area, its traditional manufacturing base.

The plane maker issued the warning just hours after senior members of the International Association of Machinists union voiced strong opposition to a proposed labour contract that is due to go to a membership vote next Wednesday.

Boeing to raise 737 production to 47/month by 2017

QuoteBoeing Co (BA.N) said it would increase production of its workhorse 737 aircraft to 47 planes per month by 2017 from 38 now, a surprise move that analysts said boded well for the company, its suppliers and airlines.

Boeing had already announced plans to increase production to 42 per month in the first half of 2014, matching current output by rival Airbus SA (EAD.PA) of its competing A320 jet family.

With the new target, Boeing would enter territory that Airbus isn't attempting. The output, from the same footprint at Boeing's 737 factory in Renton, Washington, will not only boost Boeing's cash pile, it will give the company more delivery slots to sell to airlines who want new, fuel-efficient planes sooner.

"This is a big, bold, but very strategic move by Boeing," that follows recent competitive wins by Airbus that likely have been "more heavily price-driven than in the past," said Russell Solomon, an analyst at Moody's Investors Service in New York.

He said Boeing can also be aggressive on price and now can talk with customers about new orders "with the very pointed message that they won't have to wait as long to get their greatly desired new equipment if they buy Boeing vs. the other guy."

Because of the high volume and relatively low production costs, the 737 and A320 are often seen as cash cows, and play a big role in funding development of larger and technically more challenging aircraft like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner or the Airbus A350.

Boeing Enters 787-9 Certification Test Phase

Quote
(http://www.aviationweek.com/media/images/fullsize/CommercialAviation/Airframes/Boeing/787-9Production-LizMatzelle.jpg)

Boeing has obtained type inspection authorization (TIA) for the stretched 787-9 from the FAA, officially clearing the way for the start of certification flight testing.

The award of TIA marks a key transition in the test program which now moves from establishing the basic airworthiness of the 787-9 to the more detailed and comprehensive task of certifying it for airline use.

The milestone, which covered approval for the two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered variants, comes as the overall flight test program passed 100 flights on Dec 10.

Together with the third 787-9, a General Electric GEnx-1B powered aircraft which joined the flight test program on Nov 19, the overall fleet has so far accumulated more than 285 flight test hours.

In all, five aircraft are slated for the program. The fourth and fifth 787-9s will be production aircraft with full interiors with ZB197, an aircraft destined ultimately for All Nippon Airways, scheduled to be the first of the pair to join the campaign. A Rolls-powered aircraft, ZB197 will be used principally for ETOPS and function and reliability tests as well as electro-magnetic effects (EME), which will check protection against lightning strikes. The fifth aircraft, ZB167 will be used for EME testing of the GE engine installation.

Boeing says it expects to obtain TIA for the GE-powered aircraft, ZB021 shortly. This is currently being used for airspeed calibration tests, while the first Rolls-powered 787-9 is undertaking basic flight control evaluation. Following last month's evaluation in the McKinley Climatic Laboratory at Eglin AFB, Fla., the second Rolls aircraft, ZB002, has returned to Boeing's Everett site where it is being used for ground evaluation of the extended lower lobe cargo system.

The derivative is 20 feet longer overall than the baseline 787-8, and is powered by the newly-certificated 'Package C' version of the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 or the upgraded 'PIP II' variant of the General Electric GEnx-1B. TIA award keeps Boeing's flight test schedule on track for delivery of the first 787-9 to launch customer Air New Zealand in mid-2014. Out of 1,012 787s currently booked by Boeing as firm orders some 396, or 39%, are 787-9s. The balance is made up of 496 787-8s and 120 787-10s.

Boeing Sees No Bubble In 737 Market

QuoteBoeing said on Tuesday it sees no bubble in the market for 737s and that production could rise to 60 aircraft a month at the current factory in Renton, Washington, though production may not go that high.

Beverly Wyse, Boeing's 737 program manager, told reporters the factory plans to step up production to 42 per month in the second quarter and may go to 52 per month in 2018 or 2019, but that the company was still studying the possibility.

Faster production of Boeing's best-selling 737 increases revenue, while shortening the time between when airlines order aircraft and when they are delivered, now about eight years on average. Boeing and rival Airbus have record order backlogs.

Boeing this week is starting to increase production to 42 a month from 38 and expects to achieve that rate when the first 737 built at that pace rolls of the line in the second quarter.

The company plans to lift the rate to 47 a month in 2017, Wyse said, adding that the target will not change, even as production of its new 737 MAX begins in 2015 on a third line to be added to the Renton factory.

With a third production line, the Renton factory would be capable of producing more than 60 jets a month, though it is not clear it would go to that rate, Wyse said.

Erik Nelson, director of 737 manufacturing, said Boeing plans to hold steady at 42 a month even as the MAX begins.

"The way I would put it is we'll deliver 42 a month" until the MAX enters service in 2017, he said.

At that point, production would rise to 47 a month, he said.

Sunt foarte foarte multi polonezi in State si vin macar o data pe an in tara.

Assembly of First 737 MAX Wing Begins

QuoteAssembly of the first 737 MAX in our Renton, Wash., facility kicks off with wing assembly for the first 737 MAX flight test airplane. The wings will be attached to the first 737 MAX fuselage later this year.

Wing skin panels and stringers were loaded into the new panel assembly line and initial parts of the first 737 MAX spars – internal support structures in wings – were loaded into automated spar assembly machines. When finished, the panels and spars will be transformed into completed wings.

In 2017, the new single-aisle airplane will deliver 20 percent lower fuel use than the first Next-Generation 737s and the lowest operating costs in its class – 8 percent per seat less than its nearest competitor. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market.

Volga-Dnepr Group signs MOU for 20 additional Boeing 747-800F freighters

Quote
(http://airlinersgallery.smugmug.com/Airlines-Europe-1/Airlines-Europe-1/AirBridgeCargo-ABC/i-hQczrPC/0/M/AirBridgeCargo-ABC%20747-800F%20VQ-BRJ%20%2804%29%28Grd%29%20AMS%20%28TNJ%29%2846%29-M.jpg)

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) and Volga-Dnepr Group (Moscow) (Volga-Dnepr Airlines, Atran Airlines and AirBridgeCargo Airlines), a world leader in transportation of unique, oversize and heavy cargo, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further the Group's fleet expansion with 20 additional 747-8 Freighters (above), valued at $7.4 billion at list prices.

The agreement also adds the Antonov-124-100 aircraft (below) to the long-term logistics support for Boeing and its partners.

According to Boeing:

Boeing and Volga Dnepr have a long history of successful partnership. The Group has already supported Boeing in a number of shipments. The unique technical abilities of the Antonov 124-100, along with Volga-Dnepr's 25 years of global operations and experience gained in transportation of aviation equipment, will further serve Boeing's logistics needs.

For Volga Dnepr Group, adding more 747-8 Freighters will allow development of the Group's scheduled business, AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC), and keep the airline's high growth rates. Volga-Dnepr Group was the first to order the Boeing 747-8 Freighter in Russia and took delivery of its first 747-8 Freighter in 2012. These additional 20 airplanes will be acquired through a mix of direct purchases and leasing over the next seven years.

The new 747-8 Freighter gives cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any large freighter airplane while providing enhanced environmental performance. It is optimized to provide greater revenue cargo-carrying capability than the 747-400, offering 16 percent more cargo volume while keeping its unique nose door.

Volga-Dnepr Group has represented the Russian airfreight industry in the international market since 1990. The Group, which includes three leading Russian all-cargo carriers – Volga-Dnepr Airlines, AirBridgeCargo Airlines and Atran Airlines – has a multinational team of 3,500 employees in fifteen countries.

Volga Dnepr currently operates 10 Antonov An-124-100s and five Ilyushin Il-76TD-90VDs, all modified under the Group special upgrade program and capable of flying to any point of the world. The fleet also includes 14 Boeing 747s – comprised of five Boeing 747-400ERFs (Extended Range Freighters), three Boeing 747-400 Freighters, six Boeing 747-8 Freighters – and three Boeing 737-400Fs.

Record commercial delivers drive up revenue at Boeing

QuoteBoeing has revealed second-quarter revenue increased 11 per cent to $24.5 billion on record commercial deliveries.

Second quarter 2015 results included the previously announced $536 million after-tax charge on the KC-46 Tanker program reflecting higher estimated costs.

Core earnings per share guidance for 2015 has been adjusted to between $7.70 and $7.90 per share, from $8.20 and $8.40, to reflect the impact of the second quarter 2015 KC-46 Tanker charge.

This has been partially offset by strong performance – valued at $0.27 per share.

GAAP earnings per share has been adjusted to between $7.60 and $7.80, from $8.10 and $8.30.

"Record commercial airplane deliveries to customers worldwide drove solid revenue growth, and the strength of our overall portfolio and diligent focus produced significant operating cash flow during the quarter," said Boeing president Dennis Muilenburg.

"Strong operating performance across our commercial and defence production programs partially offset the tanker charge and enabled us to maintain our commitments to return cash to our shareholders and invest in innovation and our people."

"Overall, our outlook for the second half of the year remains positive.

"On the tanker program, we are investing the necessary resources to keep this vitally important program on schedule for our customer.

"We have a clear understanding of the work to be done and we are confident that the long-term financial value of the program will reward our additional investment.

"With our sustained focus on productivity and growth, we will continue to profitably deliver on our large and diverse backlog, capture new orders, and deliver increasing value to all of our stakeholders."

Boeing completes design for Dreamliner 787-10

QuoteBoeing has completed detailed design for the 787-10 Dreamliner, achieving another major milestone in the development of the newest and longest member of the 787 family.

Boeing engineers reached the key milestone nearly two weeks ahead of schedule.

The milestone is critical to every development program because it means the information needed to build parts and tools for assembly has been completed and released for fabrication or procurement.

Major assembly of the 787-10 will begin in 2016, followed by first flight in 2017 and first delivery in 2018.

"With the 787-10, we are building upon our experience and the 787-9 design itself to create this newest member of the super-efficient 787 family," said Ken Sanger, vice president of 787 Airplane Development.

"Through our dedicated team and our disciplined processes, we have optimised the design for the needs of the market and are excited as we look forward to production."

As a straightforward stretch of the 787-9, which entered service in 2014, Boeing designed the 787-10 for superior efficiency as well as maximum commonality.

Ninety-five percent of the design and build of the 787-10 and 787-9 will be identical, reducing complexity, cost and risk across the production system and providing operational benefits to customers.

The 787-10 is the third and longest member of the 787 family.

With a range of 6,430 nautical miles (11,910 km), the 787-10 will cover more than 90 per cent of the world's twin-aisle routes at a whole new level of fuel efficiency: 25 per cent more fuel efficient than the airplanes it will replace and at least ten percent better than anything offered by the competition for the future.

To date, the 787-10 has logged 164 orders from nine customers around the world, accounting for 14 percent of all 787 orders.

Norwegian retires last Boeing 737-300

QuoteNorwegian has flown its last Boeing 737-300 from Lasham in the UK to the small town of Bodø in Northern Norway.

With all of Norwegian's Boeing 737-300s phased out, the airline's fleet now has an average age of 3.6 years making it one of the most modern and environmentally friendly in Europe.

Norwegian has given the retired Boeing 737-300 as a present to the National Aviation Museum of Norway.

Captain Johnny Silberg had the honour of flying the aircraft's final flight.

"Its new life at the museum shows the importance of Norwegian in Norway's aviation history.

"We challenged the monopoly and gave affordable fares to all," Silberg said.

The aircraft has operated 40,106 flights and spent 64,656 hours in the air.

It joined the Norwegian fleet in 2006, when the airline had 14 aircraft, 54 routes and 560 employees.

Today, Norwegian has a fleet of 102 aircraft, 439 routes and 5,500 employees.

A new fleet is crucial to success Norwegian is continuously renewing its fleet by taking delivery of brand new Boeing 737-800s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

Norwegian currently has 267 aircraft on order, including 100 Boeing 737MAX and 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

Norwegian takes pride in having a modern and efficient fleet as it benefits the passengers, the environment and the company's costs.

Boeing delivers 762 jetliners in 2015, topping forecast
NEW YORK

Boeing Co (BA.N) said on Thursday that it delivered 762 jetliners in 2015, exceeding its target of 755 to 760 planes.

The tally, which includes delivery of 34 of Boeing's flagship 787 Dreamliners in the fourth quarter, probably cements the company's position as the world's biggest plane maker, topping rival Airbus Group (AIR.PA) for the fourth straight year.

Airbus is expected to say at its annual press conference on Tuesday that in 2015 it delivered slightly more than the 629 jetliners it delivered in 2014.

Boeing delivered 120 of its 737s in the fourth quarter, slightly below the target production rate of 42 a month.

But Dreamliner output suggested it was producing its latest, high-tech aircraft at a faster rate than the target of 10 a month. Boeing is planning to increase the rate to 12 a month this year.

Boeing said its latest order tally, which is normally posted on Thursday morning, was delayed because of website problems.

Boeing shares were down 2.4 percent at $135.51 in midday New York Stock Exchange trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI was down 1.2 percent.

First Boeing 727, now restored, takes final flight

QuoteThe world's first Boeing 727 made its final flight Wednesday, taking off from Paine Field and touching down at Boeing Field, where it will be on display at the Museum of Flight.

"It brought tears to my eyes," former United flight attendant Lana Thompson said. "It really did. It was like oh my gosh, it really is the end of an era."

Boeing delivered the 727 prototype to United Airlines back in 1964.

The airliner's career spanned 27 years.

After United retired the plane in 1991, it was donated to the Museum of Flight where it has been undergoing renovations for a quarter century.

It took a lot of donated parts and volunteer hours to get it up in the air again.

The FAA granted a one-time special flight permit for the trip and crew of four.

"All the memories," former flight attendant Peggy Verger said. "I started in this airplane, started in this uniform."

Some former United crew members, like Verger, even dressed up for the occasion.

Others, like Julie Airis, brought their old photos as a throwback.

"It was in the day we served escargot, Havana cigars and three or four-course meals," Airis explained.

Visitors can check out the 727 at the Museum of Flight's airpark through the summer.

Then it will go inside the new covered aviation pavilion.

History of the Boeing 727 Prototype (courtesy of the Museum of Flight (https://www.museumofflight.org/727-final-flight))

  • The Museum's three-engine, Boeing 727-100, N7001U, first flew on February 9, 1963. Until the 777 in the 1990s, it was the only type of Boeing commercial jet with no dedicated prototype -- the first airplane was not kept as a flight test airplane, but was delivered to the "kickoff customer" airline and went into regular service.
  • The airplane was delivered to United Air Lines on Oct. 6, 1964, and remained with the company for its entire 27-year service life.
  • In 1984, the Museum of Flight's Chairman of the Aircraft Acquisition Committee, Bob Bogash, approached United top managers and asked for the 727 upon its retirement. United agreed.
  • On Jan. 13, 1991, the airplane -- repainted in its original United colors -- went to Boeing Field for a final acceptance ceremony at the Museum. It made one last flight to the museum's Paine Field Restoration Center. Bogash, a Boeing Company veteran of 30 years, became the 727 restoration project manager.
  • United removed many of the major parts on the airplane, to use as spares for its remaining fleet of 727s. The museum was left with a significant challenge with its goal to restore the airplane to airworthy condition.
  • After a few idle years, the restoration began in earnest, and grew significantly with the donation of two more 727s for parts. On March 6, 2004, Federal Express donated a 727-100 airplane to the Museum, and in September 2005, Clay Lacey donated a 727-200.

FAA Issues Warning About 787 Dreamliner's Erroneous Low Speed Readings

QuoteThe Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a safety directive warning pilots of 787-8 and 787-9 airplanes to avoid abrupt flight-control inputs in the event of sudden, unrealistic drop in indicated airspeed. The FAA also requires 787-8 and 787-9 operators to update the flight manual with the warning message: AIRSPEED DROP In the event of a sudden, unrealistic drop in indicated airspeed, do not apply large, abrupt control column inputs. Fly the airplane with normal pitch and power settings. If manual flight is needed, disconnect the autopilot prior to making manual flight control inputs.
